La Pedrera (Casa Milà) tickets: general entry, night visit and the best moment

• First morning slot. Attic and apartment nearly empty; the rooftop still in soft shade. The calm option.
• Last afternoon slot. Golden light on the sentinel chimneys is the photo you came for. In summer, the rooftop at sunset is pure gold.
• Midday. Groups, heat on the roof and lift queues. Skip it if you can.
• In rain or strong wind the rooftop closes for safety. If the forecast is bad, move your visit: the rooftop is half the experience.

Availability: La Pedrera is less pressured than the Sagrada Família — 2–3 days out you can usually pick your hour. The exceptions: the Night Experience (limited places) and holiday weekends.

When Pere Milà and Roser Segimon commissioned their new investment-house from Gaudí in 1906, they expected prestige. They got ridicule: the press caricatured the building as a zeppelin hangar, and the mocking nickname — La Pedrera, "the quarry" — stuck forever. That nickname now sits on the UNESCO list (1984).

Technically it was a quiet revolution: a self-supporting stone façade that ripples like the sea, open floor plans without load-bearing walls that every tenant could redraw, two courtyards pushing daylight deep into the block, and one of the city's first underground car parks. The attic — 270 catenary brick arches — carries the roof like a whale's ribcage and today houses the Espai Gaudí, the best hands-on explanation of how the architect thought.

It was his last civil commission: from 1912 he devoted himself entirely to the Sagrada Família. The hooded chimneys on the roof — the "warriors" — inspired half a century of artists; the story goes that George Lucas found his stormtroopers' cues in them. Since 2013 the building has been run by the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, which keeps it alive: tenants still live there between visits.
