How we score
Every review uses the same five criteria, each marked from 1 to 10. The overall score is the mean of the five, rounded to the nearest 0.5: 7.8 becomes 8, 7.6 becomes 7.5 and 6.8 becomes 7. Each page shows the breakdown, so you can disagree with the evidence in front of you.
| Criterion | What we look at |
|---|---|
| Price and transparency | Price against the official rate and the alternatives, fees that appear at checkout, a clear legal notice |
| Flexibility | Cancellation and refunds, what happens in rain or rough seas, date changes |
| Public reputation | Ratings on Tripadvisor, Google, Trustpilot and GetYourGuide, weighted by review count |
| Experience | What the product actually delivers according to review patterns: guides, crowds, timing, inclusions |
| Reliability | An identifiable company, tourism registration, years trading, complaint handling, red flags |
What we don't do
- We don't take money for reviews or for a better score. No company sees its score before it goes live.
- We haven't taken the tours as mystery shoppers. Reviews are built from each company's official terms, public ratings together with how many reviews sit behind them, and price checks on its own site and on the booking platforms on the day of the review.
- We don't make up anecdotes or name individual reviewers: we describe what comes up again and again across hundreds of reviews.
We mark hard on purpose: 9 or above is rare, a company that has closed gets no score, and a reseller with poor ratings and no refunds scores low. Right now our scores run from 6 to 8. Whether a company sells on GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Headout makes no difference to its score: Civitatis competes with all three and is among the highest rated.
How often we check
Every review is re-checked at least twice a year, before high season and before low season, and as soon as we spot a change in prices, terms or ownership. The date of the last check is on the stamp at the top of each review.

Sightseeing buses
Barcelona's two hop-on hop-off buses charge the same according to their own sites (€33 for one day, €29.70 online) and share the same summer queues at the stops. The difference is cancellation and route: TMB's bus doesn't refund, while the Julià and Moventis bus lets you cancel free on its own site and stops near the cruise terminal.
Boat trips
Three price points in the same port: Las Golondrinas to see the coast for less than a set lunch, This is Med for an hour on a catamaran with music, and Orsom if you want proper sailing at sunset.
Catamaran Orsom
Live sunset jazz for €28; very strict cancellation if you book direct.
from €18.50Review → 7/10Las Golondrinas
Sailing since 1888: pick the 60-minute trip and don't expect a live guide.
from €9Review → 6.5/10This is Med
The cheapest catamaran hour, on busy boats sold under several brand names.
from €16Review →Walking and food tours
From a tip-based free tour to €199 for Devour's priciest outing. All three operate in the Old City (Ciutat Vella), where guided groups are capped at 20, so compare group size, not just price.
Runner Bean Tours
The best-rated local free tours; "free" means tip-based, and tours run in English.
pay what you wantReview → 7.5/10Devour Tours Barcelona
Polished small-group tapas tours; pricey and limited for vegans.
from €93Review → 7/10Hidden City Tours
A social enterprise whose guides have lived on the streets; private tours only, four people minimum.
from €15.25 ppReview →Bike tours
Two different takes: Steel Donkey heads away from the landmarks into everyday neighbourhoods, while Fat Tire covers the essentials in about three hours under a brand you may know from other cities.
Day trips
For Montserrat, Girona or the Costa Brava you choose between a big, cheap coach (Julià, Catalunya Bus Turístic), a small group (Explore Catalunya) or door-to-door pickup (Barcelona Day Tours). Always read the cancellation terms: they range from 24 hours to not published at all.
Explore Catalunya
Groups of about 16 and highly rated guides; its own site keeps 10% when you cancel.
from €60Review → 7/10Julià Travel
The budget coach benchmark; big groups and often a bilingual guide.
from €49Review → 6.5/10Catalunya Bus Turístic
All-inclusive trips from Estació del Nord; no published cancellation policy.
from €50.40Review → 6/10Barcelona Day Tours
Door-to-door pickup in groups of 4 to 12; pricey, with no company name on the site.
from €69Review →Where to buy tickets and tours
Neither the city's official shop nor the online agencies cover everything: Sagrada Família and Park Güell are sold on their own websites. Before paying on a site you don't know, read our guide to unofficial ticket sites.
Civitatis
Solid for tours and free tours in Spanish; plain monument tickets cost more than the official price.
from €0 + tipReview → 7.5/10Turisme de Barcelona
The cheapest, most trustworthy place for the Barcelona Card; no Sagrada Família or Park Güell.
from €7.50Review → 6/10Atrápalo
Real discounts on shows; Sagrada Família costs far more and is often non-refundable.

These rules bind every operator, wherever you book. They explain why some tours cut stops short, and why a cheap "Gaudí tour" never steps inside a building.
Old City groups: 20 people maximum
According to Barcelona City Council, since 1 March 2023 guided tourist groups in the Ciutat Vella district (Gothic Quarter, Raval, El Born and Barceloneta) may not exceed 20 people, and megaphones, loudspeakers and amplifiers are banned. Twelve spots also cap the number of groups at once: eight in Plaça Sant Jaume and Plaça Reial, five in Plaça del Rei, three in Plaça del Pi or in front of Santa Maria del Mar. On busy days, explanations there have to be brief. The council announced in 2024 that these limits are extended until 2028.
Accredited guides inside monuments
Guiding on the street is open to anyone. Inside monuments listed as Béns Culturals d'Interès Nacional and in registered museums, however, Catalonia's tourism law (Llei 13/2002) and Decree 43/2020 require a guide licensed by the Generalitat. According to sagradafamilia.org, any party of 10 or more at the Sagrada Família must book ahead and be led by an official accredited guide; according to parkguell.barcelona, Park Güell sets the same requirement for groups.
Sagrada Família quiet hour
According to the basilica's official website, since 2 February 2026 the 9:00–10:00 slot is a daily "quiet hour": earphones are mandatory for any audio device and visits continue in silence. If you book an early guided tour, expect to hear your guide through earphones.
Companies that have closed or changed
A few names still turn up in search results and on Tripadvisor with high ratings, but no longer sell what they used to. We don't score them.
Barcelona Guide Bureau
A guiding agency with nearly three decades of activity, according to the people who describe themselves as its successors, and a Tripadvisor listing that still looks active, with reviews mostly from 2011 to 2020. According to the same source, it closed because of COVID-19. Its old domain now redirects to another website, which we don't link to. Any offer under this name does not come from the original company.
Wanderbeak, now Elysian Tales
Wanderbeak started in Barcelona in 2016 with group tapas tours. According to its own website, it relaunched in 2024 as Elysian Tales and now only sells private dinners across four venues with hotel pickup. The old group tapas tours are no longer offered, and the Tripadvisor listing has been renamed. If you want a group tapas tour, look at Devour or our food tours guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do companies pay to be listed or for their score?
No. None of the companies reviewed pays us or sees its score before publication. We only earn a commission when you book on GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Headout, and that has no bearing on the score: Civitatis, which competes with those platforms, scores 8.
What is the best-rated tour company in Barcelona?
On our method, Runner Bean Tours (free tours in English) and Civitatis (tours in Spanish) reach 8/10. It depends on the plan, though: Orsom leads for boats, Steel Donkey for bikes and Devour for tapas, all three on 7.5.
Is it better to book direct or through a platform?
It depends on the company. Barcelona Bus Turístic and Turisme de Barcelona are cheaper on their own sites. With Orsom or Explore Catalunya, on the other hand, the direct cancellation terms are stricter, and some day trips are cheaper on Tiqets or GetYourGuide. Each review compares both channels.
Are Barcelona free tours really free?
Not quite: you pay with a tip at the end. In the Old City the group cannot exceed 20 people and megaphones are banned. Free Gaudí tours see the façades from outside; to go in you need a ticket and, for groups, an accredited guide.
How can I tell if a ticket website is official?
Type the official address yourself instead of clicking ads, compare the price with the official one and be wary of management fees. Our guide to unofficial ticket sites walks you through it.
How often are the scores updated?
At least twice a year, and whenever prices, terms or ownership change. The date of the last check is on the stamp at the top of each review.
