Steel Donkey Bike Tours reviews: price, route and whether it is worth it

Verdict: a four-hour ride through neighbourhoods most visitors never see, in groups of eight or fewer, for €39 and with an excellent reputation; the weak spot is a neglected website that quotes two different cancellation deadlines — 7.5/10.

Verdict: 7.5 out of 10

Steel Donkey Bike Tours is a small local outfit that, by its own account, started in 2010 as a casual ride with a friend who knows the city. Today it sells essentially one thing: "Off The Beaten Track", four hours on a bike through neighbourhoods and corners that never make the postcards, with eight riders at most. It skips the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, and says so up front. Its public ratings are among the best we have seen for any Barcelona bike tour. What costs it points is not the ride but the admin: the website names no legal entity, the footer still reads "© 2011-2019", and the cancellation policy depends on which page you happen to read.

Steel Donkey Bike Tours score by criterion
CriterionScoreWhy
Price and transparency8/10€39 for four hours with bike, helmet and lock; the food stop is extra (about €10–15).
Flexibility6/10The FAQ says 48 hours, the tour page says 24 hours; heavy rain means they cancel the evening before.
Public reputation9/104.9/5 from over 900 reviews on Tripadvisor; 4.7/5 on the likely GetYourGuide listing.
Experience8/10Groups of eight, an easy pace and real neighbourhoods; no big landmarks, by design.
Reliability6/10Running since 2010 with an address and phone, but no published legal entity or tourism registration, and a dated website.
Overall7.5/10Mean of the five criteria (7.4), rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Who it suits

  • Visitors who have already done the landmarks (or will do them on their own) and want to see everyday life in Poblenou, El Born or a neighbourhood market.
  • Active couples and friends who would rather ride in a small group than in a column of 20 bikes.
  • Families with kids aged 7 and up on their own bikes, or younger ones in a child seat (free for ages 1–6).
  • Careful riders of average fitness: it is 6–10 km, flat, with plenty of stops.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone on their first day who wants to "see it all": a three-hour highlights tour does that job better (links below).
  • Non-English speakers: the tour runs in English.
  • Anyone uneasy cycling in traffic: part of the route is on the road.

What it sells and what it costs

There is one product: the four-hour "Off The Beaten Track" tour, leaving daily at 10:00 and 15:00. Winter has fewer departures; when our research last checked, mornings only on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so look at the calendar before you plan around it. The route is not fixed ("no two tours are the same", the site warns), but the stops it mentions give you the flavour: the Sant Pau modernista complex, Poblenou's neoclassical cemetery, a flea market, horchata on a neighbourhood rambla, a recycled-fashion workshop, hidden squares and even a game of ping-pong near Mar Bella beach. Halfway round there is a break at a tapas bar, which you pay for yourself.

The honest maths: on the base price there is no difference. The GetYourGuide listing that appears to be theirs ("4-Hour Small-Group Bike Tour of Back Alleys") starts at €39, the same as direct. One caveat, in fairness: the GetYourGuide data we work with does not name the supplier. The attribution rests on a match in duration, price, the off-the-beaten-track angle, the eight-rider cap and the "since 2010" line that appears on the same listing on Trip.com. Check the meeting point on your voucher: if it says Moll de la Marina, it is Steel Donkey.

For comparison, classic three-hour highlights bike tours start at roughly €18–35 on GetYourGuide, and the e-bike adds €10 on Steel Donkey's own site. Add the tapas stop and the real spend per adult comes to around €50–55.

The best and the worst

These are the patterns that recur in public reviews on Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide, not one-off stories.

The best

  • Genuinely small groups. Eight riders at most, and it shows at every stop, every question and every junction.
  • Neighbourhoods you would not find alone. The most common praise: seeing Poblenou, markets and local squares instead of yet another Gaudí facade.
  • Easy pace. Flat riding with many stops; reviewers like that untrained riders can manage it.
  • Guides. Reviews single out their local knowledge and friendly manner.

The worst

  • Confusing meeting point. The most repeated complaint: the shop is signed Ocean Bikes, not Steel Donkey.
  • No landmarks. Anyone expecting the Sagrada Família is surprised; the site does say so, but not everyone reads it.
  • Food is extra. You pay at the bar for the tapas stop.
  • A neglected website. A 2019 copyright line and cancellation terms that contradict each other.
05 —

The small print

  • Cancellation: the FAQ page says online bookings can be cancelled 48 hours before departure for a full refund and that last-minute cancellations are not refunded. The tour page, however, promises "free cancellation until 24h before your tour". Both lines sit on the site on the review date. If you book through a platform, that platform's terms apply.
  • Weather: in light rain guides hand out ponchos; in brief showers the group waits under cover. If heavy or all-day rain is forecast, they cancel the evening before, around 18:00.
  • Children: ages 7–11 pay the child rate; ages 1–6 ride free in a child seat.
  • Age and fitness: no upper age limit; the site says riders up to 70 have done it. Moderate fitness is enough: 6–10 km with frequent stops.
  • Helmet: free, but you have to ask for one at the shop.
  • Traffic: part of the route is on the road, and each rider is responsible for following traffic rules.
  • Accessibility: no options for riders with reduced mobility are published.
  • Group size: eight at most, far below the 20-person cap on guided groups in Ciutat Vella (and the route mostly runs outside that district anyway).

Traps and how to avoid them

Two cancellation deadlines on one website. The FAQ requires 48 hours' notice for a refund; the tour page says 24 hours. Plan around the stricter one: if your plans might change, cancel at least 48 hours ahead and keep the confirmation email.
The sign says Ocean Bikes. The meeting point is the bike hub at Moll de la Marina 1, Port Olímpic, under another company's name. Arrive early, walk down towards the water from Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica metro and ask for Steel Donkey.
It is not a landmarks tour. On a first visit with only one day, note that the Sagrada Família and Park Güell are not on the route. Pair it with a classic tour on another day, or see our guide to tours in Barcelona.
Bring money for the break. The mid-ride snack is not included. The site suggests bringing cash or a card; budget €10–15 per person.

How to book at the best price

  • Same price on both channels. €39 on steeldonkeybiketours.com and from €39 on GetYourGuide. Choose on terms, not on price.
  • A platform if you want clear rules. On GetYourGuide the cancellation policy shown on the listing at booking applies, without the website's 24/48-hour contradiction. Read it before paying.
  • Direct for an e-bike, a child seat or a private tour. The official site shows each fare and the private option.
  • First time in the city? A three-hour must-sees tour such as this highlights ride (from €35, 4.8/5 from nearly a thousand reviews) does that job better. Save Steel Donkey for day two or three.
  • Afterwards: the ride ends near the sea; if you want to stay on, see our guide to Barcelona's beaches.

Frequently asked questions

Is Steel Donkey Bike Tours reliable?

On reputation, yes: 4.9/5 from more than 900 Tripadvisor reviews, and in business since 2010. The weak side is the paperwork: the site publishes no legal entity or tourism registration and contradicts itself on the cancellation deadline.

Can I cancel a Steel Donkey tour?

Yes, but the site gives two deadlines: 48 hours in the FAQ and 24 hours on the tour page. To be safe, cancel 48 hours out. In heavy rain, they cancel the evening before.

How much does the tour cost?

€39 per adult on a standard bike, €49 on an e-bike, €29 for children aged 7–11, and free for ages 1–6 in a child seat. The tapas stop is extra (about €10–15).

Does it go to the Sagrada Família?

That is not the point. The route varies and may include Sant Pau, but it is built around neighbourhoods off the tourist circuit. If you want the landmarks, pick a highlights tour.

Where is the meeting point?

At Moll de la Marina 1, Port Olímpic, in a bike hub signed Ocean Bikes. The nearest metro is Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica (L4).

Steel Donkey or Fat Tire Tours?

Steel Donkey: four hours through low-key neighbourhoods, groups of 8, €39. Fat Tire: three hours of highlights from the Gothic Quarter, up to 9 per guide, €35. They suit different points in your trip.

Second day in Barcelona and keen to ride?

Four hours, eight riders and neighbourhoods the guidebooks skip. Check open dates and read the cancellation terms before you pay.
