Hidden City Tours reviews: Barcelona told by guides who have lived on its streets
Verdict: a highly rated social enterprise whose guides have experienced homelessness, and cheap per head for groups, but it only runs private tours (minimum four people), takes bookings by email and publishes no cancellation policy — 7/10.

Hidden City Tours is a social enterprise that trains people who have experienced homelessness in Barcelona to work as tour guides. Lisa Grace, a former market-research consultant, launched it in 2013 after being inspired by Unseen Tours, a similar project in London. Guides are recruited through a homelessness charity and trained one-to-one by the founder; according to its website, the tour fee supports a work-reintegration project.
It does not try to compete with the classic monument walks. What it offers is the city seen through the guide's own experience, and public reviews are excellent. What costs it points is the practical side: private groups only from four people, booking by email, and nothing on the site about what happens if you cancel.
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Price and transparency | 8/10 | Per-person prices published with VAT included, from €15.25 to €19. |
| Flexibility | 4/10 | No published cancellation policy, email-only booking and a four-person minimum. |
| Public reputation | 8/10 | 4.9 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, but from 444 reviews, a modest volume. |
| Experience | 8/10 | A perspective no other tour gives; light on monument history for those who want it. |
| Reliability | 6/10 | Running since 2013 with a known founder, but no legal entity or address on the site. |
| Overall | 7/10 | Average of the five criteria (6.8), rounded to the nearest 0.5. |
Good fit for
- School, university and corporate groups looking for social context as well as history.
- Repeat visitors who have done the monuments and want another side of the Raval and Gothic Quarter.
- Families or friends of four or more who want a private walk at a group price.
- Travellers who want some of their spending to go to a social project.
Not for
- Solo travellers or couples: there are no open departures to join.
- Last-minute planners who want instant payment and confirmation on their phone.
- Anyone after a monument-by-monument route full of dates and anecdotes.
- Young children: some of the content is emotionally heavy.

What it sells and what it costs
Two routes, both private. There is no departure calendar: you email with your date, time, tour, language and group size, and they confirm by email.
- Classic Hidden City Walking Tour, about 2 hours through the Gothic Quarter and the Raval. It starts at Plaça Nova 1, by the Cathedral, and ends at La Boqueria market. Pitched at first-timers and repeat visitors alike.
- Streetlife Hidden City Walking Tour, around 1 h 30 in the Raval, focused on the daily lives of people living on the street. It starts at the Drassanes metro exit on La Rambla and ends by the Liceu opera house.
| Group | Hidden City (official site) | Approximate group total | Compared on GetYourGuide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–7 people | €19 (minimum 4) | from €76 | Private or small-group Gothic walk: from €29 per person |
| 8–20 people | €16.95 | from €135.60 | Shared small-group walk: from €19.80 per person |
| 21 or more | €15.25 | from €320.25, split into groups | — |
The honest maths: Hidden City is not sold on GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Headout, so there is no identical tour to compare. The closest thing on a platform is an old-town walk, and there Hidden City comes out cheaper per person: a private or small-group Gothic Quarter walk starts at €29 a head on GetYourGuide, against Hidden City's €19 for a party of four. What the platform's extra cost buys you is instant booking and written cancellation terms.
For one or two people the sums change. If the four-person minimum applies the way its price table suggests, a couple would pay €76 for a private walk. Ask by email first; if there is no way round it, a shared walk on a platform from €19.80 makes more sense.

The best and the worst
A summary of what recurs in public Tripadvisor reviews.
The best
- Honesty. The most praised quality: the guide tells their own story without varnish.
- A different city. Many visitors say they saw a part of Barcelona tourists never notice.
- Educational use. Tripadvisor has photos of student groups: schools and universities use it as an outing with social content.
- The impact. Knowing the fee supports a job weighs heavily in many reviews.
The worst
- More personal story than city history. The most common criticism, though rare, and found in older reviews.
- Email logistics, slower than a booking button.
- No interiors: the whole walk is outdoors.
The small print
- Cancellation: no policy on the website. Ask for the terms in writing in the confirmation email before fixing a date, especially for a large group.
- Weather: no rain policy published. It is a street walk; ask what happens if it rains.
- Children: no published rules. The site and the reviews make clear that life on the street is the subject; think about it with young children.
- Accessibility: no information on the site. The routes follow Gothic Quarter and Raval streets; ask about the itinerary if anyone uses a wheelchair.
- Tipping: this is not a free tour; the price is fixed. The site says nothing about tips.
- Large groups: since 1 March 2023, guided tourist groups in Ciutat Vella may not exceed 20 people (the decree runs to 2028), and megaphones or loudspeakers are banned. If you are 21 or more, you will be split into several groups with different guides; the site does not spell this out, but that is the rule.
- Meeting point: Plaça Nova is not one of the twelve squares with a cap on simultaneous groups, so the Classic tour's start is not subject to those limits.
Traps and how to avoid them
How to book at the best price
- Four or more → book direct. Get in touch via hiddencitytours.com with your date, time, route, language and numbers. It is the only channel and, per head, the cheapest private guided walk we found.
- Ask in writing what happens if you cancel or your numbers change, and how payment works.
- One to three people → a shared walk. A small-group Gothic Quarter and El Born walk starts at €19.80 per person. No social angle, but online booking and cancellation.
- History with a social edge → another option. The Civil War and dictatorship walking tour (from €28, 4.9/5 from more than 300 reviews) also shows a Barcelona that is not on the postcards.
- Want a private walk with instant booking? The private or small-group Gothic walk starts at €29 per person. Dearer than Hidden City, but with live availability.
- More options in our guides to Barcelona tours and the Gothic Quarter.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hidden City Tours legit?
It has been running since 2013, its founder is publicly known and it holds 4.9 out of 5 from 444 Tripadvisor reviews. The weak point is legal information: the site shows no company name, address or cancellation policy, so get the terms in writing.
Who are the guides?
People who have experienced homelessness in Barcelona. They come through a social charity and the founder trains them one-to-one. According to the website, tour fees support a work-reintegration project.
Can I go if I am travelling solo or as a couple?
There are no open departures to join. Pricing starts at four people, so you would probably pay as four. Ask by email; if it does not add up, choose a shared walk.
How much does it cost?
€19 per person for groups of 4 to 7, €16.95 for 8 to 20 and €15.25 from 21 up, VAT included, according to its website.
Which languages are available?
English, German and Spanish, on both routes.
Can I cancel?
The website publishes no cancellation policy. Ask for it in writing when you confirm by email.
Is it suitable for children?
No restriction is published, but the subject is life on the street and some topics are hard. School groups do take it; with young children, think it over.
Fewer than four of you?
Email Hidden City to ask, and if it does not work out, book a small-group old-town walk with online cancellation.
