  • Montserrat. A Benedictine monastery founded in 1025, wedged between rock needles, home to the Black Madonna (patron saint of Catalonia) and the Escolania boys' choir singing at midday. Barcelona's best-selling day trip — it has its own guide comparing DIY train + rack railway against a tour.
  • Girona. Carolingian walls, El Call — one of Europe's best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters — and the painted houses hanging over the river Onyar. Game of Thrones fans will recognise the cathedral steps and the Passeig Arqueològic: much of Braavos and King's Landing's Old Town was shot here for season 6.
  • Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Salvador Dalí designed the museum himself over the ruins of the town theatre, and he is buried beneath its geodesic dome, at the exact centre of his own work. Buy a timed ticket on salvador-dali.org before boarding the train.
  • Costa Brava. Tossa de Mar with its walled Vila Vella (the last fortified medieval enclosure standing on the Catalan coast), Calella de Palafrugell, and the transparent-water coves that earned the shoreline its name — the "wild coast". No train: a bus to the bigger towns, or a tour to string several coves into one day.
  • Sitges. Seventeen beaches, a whitewashed old town around the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, and the bohemian modernisme legacy of Santiago Rusiñol at the Cau Ferrat museum. Forty minutes away: the escape that needs zero planning.

The general rule: if the destination is a city with a central station — Girona, Sitges, Tarragona, Figueres — the DIY train is cheaper and leaves you free to set your own pace. If the destination is scattered territory — coves, wineries, Pyrenean valleys — public transport gets you halfway there, and the tour stops being a splurge and becomes the right tool.

  • Costa Brava: there is no train, and the bus reaches one village only. A small-group tour with hotel pickup combines Girona with coves and coastal villages in a single day — by public transport you would need two days and a lot of patience.
  • Dalí + Cadaqués: the Figueres museum is reachable by train, but Cadaqués and the Portlligat house sit another hour down the road with no rail link. The Girona + Figueres + Cadaqués tour is the only realistic way to chain all three without a car.
