Barcelona Bus Turístic reviews: prices, routes and whether it is worth it

Verdict: TMB's public sightseeing bus has good coverage and the lowest price on its own site, but direct tickets are non-refundable and summer queues at stops are the top complaint — 6.5/10.

Verdict: 6.5 out of 10

Barcelona Bus Turístic is the sightseeing bus run by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the public company behind the city's metro and buses, together with Turisme de Barcelona. It has been running since 1987, operates two routes (Red and Blue), and is the only one of the city's two hop-on hop-off lines that climbs towards Tibidabo, Sarrià and Pedralbes. As a company it is as solid as they come. The weak spots are the small print (no refunds) and what July and August riders keep reporting: full buses and long waits.

Barcelona Bus Turístic score by criterion
CriterionScoreWhy
Price and transparency7/10Clear fares and 10% off online, but the terms say "calendar days" while its own shop sells "24 or 48 hours".
Flexibility4/10No refunds once bought; you only get 90 days to start using the ticket.
Public reputation6/103.9 on Tripadvisor and 3.6 on Google against 4.3 on GetYourGuide and Tiqets.
Experience6/10Wide coverage and a 16-language audio guide; queues and full buses in high season.
Reliability9/10Public operator, running since 1987, legal and contact details in plain view.
Overall6.5/10Mean of the five criteria, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Good for

  • A first visit of one or two days, especially if you want Montjuïc and Tibidabo without juggling funiculars and changes.
  • Over-65s: the senior online fare (€25.20) is the cheapest of the two sightseeing buses.
  • Families with small children and travellers with reduced mobility: every bus has a ramp and a wheelchair space.
  • Anyone heading for Pedralbes, Sarrià or Tibidabo: the Blue route goes there, the rival does not.

Not for

  • A single day in July or August when you plan to hop off at Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló around midday.
  • Anyone who needs to be able to cancel: bought on the official site, there is no refund.
  • Longer stays and keen walkers: public transport costs far less (see our Barcelona transport guide).

What it sells and what it costs

Two loops from Plaça de Catalunya, roughly two hours each. The Blue route runs up Passeig de Gràcia to Sant Pau, Park Güell, Plaça Kennedy (for Tibidabo), Sarrià, the FC Barcelona area and Pedralbes. The Red route covers Sant Antoni, Montjuïc (CaixaForum, Poble Espanyol, MNAC, the Olympic Ring, Fundació Miró, the cable car), the WTC, Arc de Triomf, Sagrada Família, Poblenou, the Fòrum, the beaches, Port Olímpic, Barceloneta and the Columbus monument. The site advertises "more than 35 stops". Buses run daily 09:00–19:00 (last departure from Plaça de Catalunya) except 1 January and 25 December, every 10 to 25 minutes depending on the season.

The honest maths: the official website is the cheapest place to buy. GetYourGuide and Headout charge the walk-up fare (€33), which is €3.30 more than the official online price; Tiqets sits at €30.50, 80 cents more. What that gap buys you is the right to cancel: Tiqets lets you cancel free until 23:59 the day before, and GetYourGuide usually offers free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead on this ticket (check the listing before you pay). On the official site, once it is bought, it is gone.

Tiqets also sells bundles that include this bus, such as Park Güell + cable car + Bus Turístic (from €64.50) and Casa Batlló + Bus Turístic (from €72.50). Both are listed as non-refundable, so they lose the one advantage that justifies buying on a platform.

Included in the ticket: a 16-language audio guide with headphones, on-board Wi-Fi, a map and a discount booklet (for example 20% off Poble Espanyol and the Columbus Monument viewpoint, €2 off the Aquarium and 15% off Catalunya Bus Turístic day trips with the booklet's code).

The best and the worst

These are the patterns that keep coming back in recent Tripadvisor and Google reviews, not one-off stories.

The best

  • Coverage. With both routes you see nearly all the big sights in a day, and it is the only bus that reaches Tibidabo (via Plaça Kennedy), Sarrià and Pedralbes.
  • Audio guide in many languages, appreciated by groups travelling with people who speak neither English nor Spanish.
  • Senior fare: older riders repeatedly say the 65+ online price is good value.
  • A rest for tired legs: families and people with limited mobility use it as comfortable transport between sights.

The worst

  • Queues and full buses: several reviews from this summer describe 40–45 minute waits and buses driving past because they are full.
  • Audio out of sync with what you are looking at, or headsets that do not work.
  • Stops a walk away from the sight and hard to find, with no shade while you wait in summer.
  • Staff attitude: some complaints about boarding refusals and rude replies.
05 —

The small print

  • Cancellation: the general conditions state that refunds cannot be made once a ticket has been bought. In exchange, a booking is valid for 90 calendar days from purchase to start using it. Night Tour and Christmas Tour tickets are only valid for the booked date and time, with no refunds.
  • Validity: one calendar day or two consecutive calendar days, "not 24/48 hour periods". A 1-day ticket expires at the end of service on the day you first use it.
  • Weather: no rain policy is published. Service can change without notice for force majeure, events or holidays (on marathon day, for example, both routes are diverted in the morning).
  • Children: under 4s ride free; child fare from 4 to 12. Pushchairs travel folded on the lower deck and there are no luggage racks.
  • Accessibility: every bus has a ramp and a wheelchair space; Night Tour buses are also adapted for hearing difficulties.
  • On-board rules: no eating or drinking, no swimwear or bare chests, no open umbrellas and no standing on the top deck. E-scooters are banned; pets only in carriers.
  • Night Tour: in summer (1 June to 13 September this season), 21:30 from Plaça de Catalunya, about 90 minutes, with a live guide in Spanish or English. It is a panoramic loop with no stops to get off.

Traps and how to avoid them

There are two "official" sightseeing buses, and a ticket for one is NOT valid on the other. Barcelona Bus Turístic (TMB, Red and Blue routes) and Barcelona City Tour (Julià and Moventis, Green and Orange routes) both leave from Plaça de Catalunya, charge the same and both call themselves official. To make it worse, City Tour's buses are red too. Check the route names on your ticket before boarding and wait at your own operator's stop.
On GetYourGuide it is not called Bus Turístic. It is listed as "City Sightseeing Barcelona – 2 Routes", because the service belongs to the City Sightseeing network. If you search a platform for "Barcelona City Tour", you are buying the other bus.
"24 hours" that is really one calendar day. Tiqets and even the Hola Barcelona shop describe 24- or 48-hour tickets, but the official conditions say calendar days. Until that is cleared up, assume the worst: start at 17:00 on a 1-day ticket and it may only last until 19:00.
Queues at the star stops. Start at 09:00, ride the quieter route first and avoid hopping off at Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló around midday in July and August: that is exactly where the queues to get back on build up.
Stops that no longer exist. The Torre Glòries – 22@ stop on the Red route was cancelled in January (alternative: C/ Badajoz 160) and the Estació de Sants stop is also listed as cancelled. Check the service notice on the website before you plan.

How to book at the best price

  • Fixed plans → official website. €29.70 a day for adults and €25.20 for over-65s on barcelonabusturistic.cat or the Hola Barcelona app. Cheapest, full stop.
  • Uncertain dates → Tiqets. The Tiqets ticket costs €30.50 and can be cancelled free until the day before. For 80 cents, that is the best insurance going.
  • Already use GetYourGuide or Headout? GetYourGuide and Headout charge €33. Worth it only if you want everything in one app; check the cancellation terms shown on the listing that day.
  • Got a Barcelona Card? It gives 10% off the Bus Turístic, the same as buying online. Compare in our city passes guide.
  • Is the bus worth it at all? Routes, stops and the comparison with the metro are in our Barcelona hop-on hop-off guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barcelona Bus Turístic reliable?

As a company, yes: it has been run by TMB, Barcelona's public transport operator, since 1987. The complaints are about the experience, not reliability: summer queues and no refunds when you buy on the official site.

Barcelona Bus Turístic or Barcelona City Tour?

They cost the same. Bus Turístic (Red and Blue) reaches Tibidabo, Sarrià and Pedralbes and is cheapest for over-65s; City Tour (Green and Orange) stops near the cruise terminal and offers free cancellation on its own site. A ticket for one is not valid on the other.

Can I cancel my ticket?

Not if you bought it on the official site: its conditions rule out refunds. On Tiqets you can cancel free until 23:59 the day before; on GetYourGuide it is usually up to 24 hours ahead (check the listing).

Does the 1-day ticket last 24 hours?

According to the official conditions, no: it is valid for one calendar day and expires at the end of service (last departure 19:00). Some shops say 24 hours; if you start late, do not count on it.

Where do I catch it, and when?

At any stop, but the main departure point is Plaça de Catalunya. It runs 09:00–19:00 every day except 1 January and 25 December, with buses every 10–25 minutes.

Is it cheaper on GetYourGuide?

No. GetYourGuide charges €33, the walk-up fare; the official site sells online at €29.70. The reason to use a platform is free cancellation, not price.

Want a safety net?

If your dates might move, pay 80 cents more on Tiqets and keep free cancellation until the day before. If your plan is fixed, buy on the official website.
